Amarone rarely comes at weeknight prices, so we were thrilled when we stumbled across this sneaky substitute.
The secret is appassimento, the ancient technique of drying the grapes before winemaking to concentrate the rich fruit flavours. These grapes are left to naturally dry on the vine, resulting in flavours of rich stewed fruit; fresh cherry and plum; and a hint of sweet baking spices.
Made with similar grapes, using the same techniques as Amarone but just outside the appellation’s boundaries, it’s a fraction of the price for the same rich, round Italian red.
This has long been one of our best sellers the balance of smooth fruit and deep flavour is hard to beat at this price.
