Niepoort Tiara is surely one of the most elegant and compelling white wines to come out of the Douro. Despite the warmth of the 2017 vintage, it shows remarkable freshness, vibrancy and complexity. The secret lies in the vineyards - vines of up to 100 years age from precipitous vineyards at 600m altitude give the wine intense concentration along with great freshness.
The grapes are harvested by hand, and then fermented spontaneously in large wooden casks. Malolactic conversion is not blocked.
This is not a sweet, fruity, aromatic style. On the nose, it is initially subtle, shy, almost austere. The palate is broad and textured with incredible length. With time in the glass, notes of almond, white flowers and an intensely savoury minerality shine through.
At "19++" out of a maximum 20, this is the highest scoring white wine I have ever seen on Jancis Robinson's website and an incredible endorsement of the quality of Dirk Niepoort's white Douro wines.
Grape varieties: Códega do Larinho, Rabigato, Donzelinho, Cercial and others
