Irishman Dermot met his New Zealand wife and together, they began Stonecroft, one of only a handful of wineries in the prestigious Hawkes Bay sub region, Gimblett Gravels. In this part of the country, Syrah is king, being perfectly suited to the gravelly soils that make up the area. Stonecroft are making some of the most beguiling, exciting wines in this new region.
Their Crofter’s Syrah is more akin to the Northern Rhone than anything else, with those classic flavours of black pepper, black fruit and even smoked meat and leather. Exciting, characterful and, most importantly, very delicious indeed.
