California has made something of a star of Zinfandel and if you like that bright, jammy hit then this knocks it out the park.
The story here is all about the fruit: ripe jammy strawberry and raspberry which bounds out of the glass with toasty oak flavours. There’s good acidity to keep it all in check and a spicy note too, but the focus is very much on that ripe, powerful berry flavour.
Contra Costa County, nestled in the bays by San Francisco, used to be a thriving wine scene, but over the years the vineyards have gone and suburbia encroached, with Viano left as the last producer standing.
A combination of old vines and a cooling bay breezes means they're perfectly placed to make powerful, expressive wines, and at a price you won't find in the more prestigious regions.
